Mentoring New Superintendents
Superintendents with no experience are often thrown into an ever-changing job with high expectations from the Board of Education, community, and staff. In order to make sure a new superintendent is successful, support and mentoring from a person with experience as a superintendent is important.
Budget and staffing, passing levies, negotiating contracts, building new schools and instructional leadership can often overwhelm someone who has not done the job before. Schools have mentoring programs in place for teachers but often forget that same mentoring support for administrators. Districts can be penny-wise but pound-foolish when they do not provide needed support for a new superintendent.
The School Study Council can offer this support from a former superintendent with 26 experience or provide access to retired superintendents. If you are interested, contact Dr. Doug Carpenter at dcarpenter@ssco.org or by phone at 614-785-1168 x101 and a program can be personalized to your school district.
